In a significant move to revolutionize the landscape of film education and production in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art virtual production studio. Nestled within the expansive Shaw studio, one of the premier film facilities in the Greater Bay Area, this new addition aims to elevate professional education standards while enhancing filming capabilities within the city.
Boasting an impressive array of cutting-edge technology, the newly inaugurated studio features Hong Kong’s largest Samsung microLED display, along with specialized Disguise technology and ARRI solutions. These advancements represent a monumental leap forward for the local virtual production industry, positioning Hong Kong as a hub for innovation and creativity in filmmaking.
Spanning an expansive 9,000 square feet, the studio stands as the largest filming location dedicated to virtual production in Hong Kong. Equipped with state-of-the-art control rooms, workstations, and changing facilities, it provides a conducive environment for collaboration between HKDI students, faculty members, and industry professionals. Here, they can seamlessly integrate virtual and real scenes, leveraging the space, technology, and equipment to push the boundaries of creative experimentation.
In its inaugural phase, the studio will benefit two film professionals who are proud graduates of HKDI, further underscoring the institute’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering industry connections. Dr. Lai-Liang Ong, Director of HKDI and IVE (Lee Wai Lee), expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “HKDI has always emphasized the integration of theory and practice, offering students cutting-edge courses closely aligned with industry needs. The opening of the Virtual Production Studio empowers students to utilize widely adopted virtual production systems with world-class tools, unleashing their creativity and equipping them for future endeavors in the field.”
This initiative marks yet another milestone for HKDI, which previously garnered acclaim as the only institution in Hong Kong to receive training accreditation from three leading film production brands simultaneously – Disguise, ARRI, and Dolby.
