DNEG VFX Supervisor: Paul Lambert

Last night, the Houston Film Critics Society presented the award for Best Visual Effects to Paul and the VFX artists who worked on Damien Chazelle’s epic moon-landing drama First Man. Paul was the Production VFX Supervisor and DNEG was the lead VFX partner on the Neil Armstrong biopic.

Meanwhile, at the start of this week, judges at the prestigious Capri, Hollywood Film Festival also named First Man as the winner of the Best Visual Effects category. The movie also won Best Original Score

Established in 1995, The Capri, Hollywood International Film Festival, takes place on the Italian island of Capri each December. With its ability to attract some of the biggest names in Hollywood, the event is regarded as “the last major film festival for the year” and a “key stopping point on the road to the Oscars”.

As lead VFX partner on First Man, Paul and our team of VFX experts used a blend of cutting-edge in-camera VFX techniques, special effects, scale models, and never-before-seen footage from NASA’s archive, to achieve the director’s creative vision of a 1960’s documentary-style for this epic movie.

This week’s double award wins come just ahead of the Academy Awards “Bake-Off” round, on January 5th. The outcome of this stage of judging will determine whether First Man is a finalist for the Best Visual Effects Oscar (five finalists to be announced on Jan 22nd – watch this space)
