Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was the first film where we were able to take our performance capture technology out on location. Take a look at how these developments helped us achieve the emotion and realism seen in digital ape characters.
Weta Digital had the complex task of humanizing the digital ape characters, which was made possible by a fusion of advanced digital techniques – the performances of extremely talented performance capture actors and the artistry of animators and VFX artists. This work involved cutting-edge technology including an advanced outdoor motion capture system, fur simulation tools, and detailed facial geometry to achieve nuanced and emotive character performances.
